Helping create a world-class IT organization

Challenge:
A mining concern with global operations sought to improve processes and enhance the professionalism of the IT department of their U.S. headquarters. The existing, small I T department was originally set up to support a single, local mine. IT was suddenly faced with the daunting task of supporting many different mines throughout the United States and the world. They lacked the robust processes to satisfy multiple clients, the experience to release tested software to production, and the delivery speed to keep new clients happy. Many integral aspects of the project development lifecycle needed to be defined and implemented in a way assured to work for their clients.

Solution:
STG supplied professional project managers for each of the projects being handled by the IT team. We established a project management office (PMO) with a standard development methodology. Soon after, a senior QA manager was added to provide the vision for the QA relationship with the new PMO. Carefully selected C-Sharp developers brought additional skills and modeled successful working relationships with Project Management and Quality Assurance. The group pooled their expertise to define new processes and best practices and implement them within the existing organizations.

Result:
The local IT department now successfully services all clients in North America and some other clients throughout the world. Most projects run through the local PMO, and quality controls are in place – including project sign-off by QA and full client sponsorship before projects move to production. The senior C-sharp developers placed by STG trained and coached the IT staff in working successfully with this new infrastructure. The once small, local IT center has become a model of successful project implementation for their counterparts around the world.
